Part 2 of 2: Costs and funding, the NCLEX-RN and licensure, your first RN job and FAQs
What does a bridge cost?
No federal agency publishes an average cost for LPN-to-RN programs, and we won’t invent one. Prices depend mainly on whether the school is public or private, and on how many credits you need after advanced placement. For context, the College Board reports these average published tuition and fees for 2025–26, before aid:
| Sector (2025–26) | Average published tuition and fees per year |
|---|---|
| Public two-year, in-district | $4,150 |
| Public four-year, in-state | $11,950 |
| Private nonprofit four-year | $45,000 |
Nursing programs often add program-specific costs: lab and clinical fees, uniforms, equipment, background checks and drug screens, standardised testing, and licensing fees. The College Board also estimates that public two-year students need an average total budget of $21,320 for 2025–26, including living costs.
Build your own estimate
Total cost = credits needed × per-credit tuition + program fees + exam and licensing fees + books, uniforms and equipment + any lost earnings if you cut your working hours.
Lost earnings are often the biggest hidden cost for working LPNs. Ask whether the program offers evening, weekend or part-time options, and plan your clinical schedule with your employer.
Funding routes
- FAFSA: file at studentaid.gov to see federal grants and loans. The maximum Federal Pell Grant for 2026–27 is $7,395 (Federal Student Aid). Pell is generally for students without a bachelor’s degree, and eligibility depends on your FAFSA.
- Employer tuition assistance: under IRS rules, up to $5,250 a year of employer educational assistance can be excluded from your income (IRS Publication 970). Check for any work commitment.
- **HRSA NURSE Corps Scholarship:** covers tuition, eligible fees and other reasonable costs, plus a monthly stipend, in exchange for service at a facility with a critical shortage of nurses after graduation. HRSA says the entire award is taxable. The 2026 cycle is closed.
- State programs: many states run nursing scholarships or grants. Check your state higher-education agency and board of nursing.
Questions to ask before you sign
- How many credits will I receive for my LPN education and license?
- What’s the total cost, including all fees, in writing?
- Is the program approved by my state board and accredited by ACEN or CNEA?
- What are the program’s first-time NCLEX-RN pass rate and completion rate?
General information, not legal, financial or immigration advice. Rules vary by state/province; check the official source or a licensed professional.
In short: there’s no official average bridge price. Build a written estimate including fees and lost hours, then apply for FAFSA aid, employer assistance and HRSA or state programs.
The licensure steps
- Graduate from a board-approved RN program.
- Apply for licensure with the board of nursing in the state where you want to be licensed. Requirements such as fingerprints and background checks vary by state.
- Register for the NCLEX-RN with Pearson VUE. NCSBN says the registration fee is $200 in the US for registrations completed before 1 February 2027, and $350 for registrations on or after that date. The exam date doesn’t affect the fee, and the change also applies to retakes.
- Receive your Authorization to Test once the board confirms you’re eligible, then schedule your exam.
- Pass the exam, after which the board issues your RN license.
Timing tip
If you’ll graduate close to February 2027, the date you complete your registration determines the fee, not the date you sit the exam. That’s a $150 difference.
Multistate practice
NCSBN reports 43 jurisdictions have enacted the Nurse Licensure Compact. If your primary state of residence is a compact state, your RN license may be multistate. Check NCSBN’s current map, because some jurisdictions are still implementing.
The RN–LPN pay gap by state
| State | RN median | LPN median | Gap |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hawaii | $136,320 | $71,140 | $65,180 |
| California | $140,270 | $79,750 | $60,520 |
| Oregon | $129,010 | $80,470 | $48,540 |
| New York | $109,440 | $67,180 | $42,260 |
| Washington | $124,200 | $83,150 | $41,050 |
| Texas | $95,970 | $62,240 | $33,730 |
| Pennsylvania | $96,430 | $63,940 | $32,490 |
| Florida | $84,190 | $61,770 | $22,420 |
| Ohio | $82,510 | $61,950 | $20,560 |
| Indiana | $83,500 | $65,720 | $17,780 |
| Kansas | $79,320 | $61,760 | $17,560 |
| Iowa | $78,630 | $62,630 | $16,000 |
| Maine | $86,990 | $73,200 | $13,790 |

Realistic timeline
Your timeline = prerequisites + bridge coursework and clinicals + board application processing + NCLEX scheduling. Board processing times vary, so check your board’s website for current guidance.
Reading the state gap
A large gap doesn’t automatically mean a better return. In Hawaii and California, both RN and LPN pay are high, and so is the cost of living. In states with small gaps, such as Maine and Iowa, the bridge may still be worthwhile for the wider range of roles RNs can take on, but the pay case is weaker. Compare your own current LPN wage with your state’s RN 10th–25th percentile on the BLS OEWS site for a more personal estimate.
In short: apply to your board, register for the NCLEX-RN ($200 before 1 February 2027, $350 after) and pass. The pay gap you’re working towards ranges from about $14,000 to $65,000 depending on your state.
Where new RNs work
BLS medians for RNs by industry, May 2025:
| Industry | RN median | RN jobs |
|---|---|---|
| General medical and surgical hospitals | $100,210 | 1,902,960 |
| Skilled nursing facilities | $85,510 | 142,270 |
| Offices of physicians | $85,000 | 232,420 |
| Home health care services | $84,930 | 198,180 |
Many LPNs already work in skilled nursing (the largest LPN employer, with 188,210 LPN jobs and a $70,430 LPN median). Some bridge graduates stay with their employer in an RN role, while others move into hospitals.
The ladder beyond RN
- RN to BSN: an ADN-prepared RN can complete a BSN, often online. AACN says these programs typically take 1–2 years. See our RN-to-BSN guide.
- Graduate roles: nurse practitioners had a May 2025 median of $132,300 and typically need a master’s degree (BLS).
How to apply to an LPN to RN bridge program
Bridge programs admit students directly, and there is no single application system, so work through these official checks in order:
- Confirm the program is approved by your state board of nursing. Approval is what lets graduates sit the NCLEX-RN in that state. Find your board in the NCSBN directory of boards of nursing.
- Check accreditation. Search the ACEN program search, NLN CNEA or, for LPN to BSN routes, the CCNE directory.
- File the FAFSA. Federal grants and loans start with the FAFSA; bridge programs at accredited schools are usually eligible.
- Prepare your file. Expect an active LPN/LVN license, transcripts, prerequisite courses such as anatomy and physiology, and often an entrance test and proof of work experience.
- Plan the licensing step. After graduation, you apply to your board for RN licensure and register for the exam through the official NCLEX site.
Ask each school for its NCLEX pass rate and clinical placement arrangements before you enrol.
FAQs
Can I do an LPN-to-RN program fully online?
Coursework may be online, but clinical experience is required. Confirm board approval for your state.
Do I take the NCLEX-PN again, and what if I fail the NCLEX-RN?
No, you take the NCLEX-RN, a different exam. If you don’t pass, you can retake it under your board’s rules, and fees apply to each registration.
Is an ADN enough?
It qualifies you to take the NCLEX-RN. Some employers, often hospitals, may require a BSN, according to BLS, and New York has a “BSN in 10” law for newly licensed RNs.
How many people pass the NCLEX-RN first time?
In 2025, 86.1% of first-time, US-educated candidates from associate degree programs passed, according to NCSBN. Ask each program for its own first-time pass rate and compare it with that benchmark (Part 1).
Can I keep working as an LPN while I study?
Many LPNs do. Ask whether the program offers evening, weekend or part-time options, and plan your clinical schedule with your employer early, because lost hours can be the biggest hidden cost (see below).
Will I earn the RN median straight away?
Probably not. Nationally, the 10th percentile for RNs was $68,940 and the 25th was $80,330 in May 2025 (BLS). New RNs are often nearer those figures. Experienced LPNs moving into RN roles may want to ask their current employer how prior experience is recognised in RN pay scales.
In short: choose a board-approved, accredited bridge, register for the NCLEX-RN at the right time, and remember that a license only ever comes from your state board.
